Writing great meta descriptions is as easy as solving a 3rd year math problem while you are in class 3. Yes, it is not that easy. Nonetheless having the right guide while writing it is one step closer to solving the “math” problem.

Meta description is a snippet of up to about 155 characters – a tag in HTML –which summarizes a page’s content, more or less like an advert for the web page.

To get the meta description right and optimizing it, you need to consider the following characteristics;

  1. Length

A meta description should contain up to 155 characters – and sometimes more. Although google has been testing longer snippets, right length doesn’t really exist; it rests on on the message you want to communicate.

  1. Uniqueness

As with title tags, meta descriptions must be written differently for every page. Google may penalize you for mass copy-pasting your meta descriptions.

  1. Relatable Copy

Google tracks meta descriptions that trick visitors into clicking to certain sites and this in turn increases bounce rate. It is very important for the meta description to match the content.

  1. Focus Keywords

Often search engines will highlight in bold if the search keyword matches a part of the text in the meta description. This will make the link to your site even more welcoming.

  1. Call To Action

Invitations like; Get it now, Try for free, Learn more, Find more on…etc, come in handy and make your website link more appealing.

Why is a right meta description important?

Because it fully optimizes the search engine and it also influences the decision of the searcher as to where they want to click on your content from search results or not.
