Ever noticed that some website URLs are termed as Secure while others insecure? Some start with “http://” while others start with “https://”?

Ever asked yourself why there is that difference? Where that extra “s” comes from, and what it means?

To put it simply, the extra “s” means your connection to that website is secure and encrypted hence any data you enter is safely shared with that website. The technology that powers that little “s” is called SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer.

According to SSL.com, Secure Sockets Layer is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser or a mail server and a mail client server. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.

SSL allows sensitive information such as credit card numbers and login credentials to be transmitted securely. Normally, data sent between browsers and web servers is sent in plain text—leaving you vulnerable to eavesdropping. If an attacker is able to intercept all data being sent between a browser and a web server, they can see and use that information.

In short, it helps keep the hackers away and makes a fast connection between your browser and server.

All browsers have the capability to interact with secured web servers using the SSL protocol. However, the browser and the server needs this SSL Certificate to be able to establish a secure connection.

And as of July this year Google has made Secure Sockets Layer mandatory on websites displayed via Chrome. It began flagging all websites without SSL certificates. In light of this we strongly advice that you obtain an SSL certificate for your valued website.
